Gift baskets are great way to give themed gifts to kids and teens. You can figure out a wide range of options to give them something that they will like. At the same time you have ultimate control over how much you spend. Choosing a theme allows you to purchase items related to your theme from a variety of locations, and you can even include a gift card as part of the basket if you would like. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

The Basket.

The perfect place to start with a gift basket is the basket itself. Many people go with a basic wicker basket, but if you choose another option it is likely to have a use later on. You can choose a square basket so it can easily be placed on a shelf with items in it, you can choose a small tote for the toys to be stored on (to make it really cute and open wrap it with cellophane with the lid on the bottom), or choose another container that will be used. The container can be a gift in itself, like a tool apron, totebag or hat.

Filling:

Little Kids.

Young kids are often easy to buy for. Get your basket, tote, or tin and fill it part way with “grass” or shredded paper. You can also place a small blanket in there on the bottom to hold the items up. Consider cars, plastic animals, bath toys, and balls for themed gifts for boys. Girls will like dolls, dress up items, and age appropriate jewelry. You can also do mixes of items. Consider a small stuffed toy, color crayons, a coloring book, another book option, and a small toy. You can choose items related to a theme, like “baseball” or “kittens”, or a favorite movie or character. No matter what you choose, make sure that the items you choose are safe for little ones.

Bigger Kids.

As the kids grow it may be harder to find inexpensive gifts that will make great gift baskets. Choose sports related items, a “farm” such as an ant farm, tadpole pond, or other kit with small live critters, or outdoor toys for the boys. Inflatables usually fit into a gift basket (as long as you don’t blow them up first). Girls will enjoy make up (even if it is pretend), nail polish, and things that will make them feel grown up. You can also do a craft basket that is likely to be a hit for both girls and boys. Or go with a goodies basket that has candy, cocoa, and other good stuff for the winter time. No matter theme you choose, start shopping early-any time you spot an inexpensive item that will work for your basket, purchase it and put it aside…when it is time to assemble your basket, you will have plenty of items on hand.

Teens.

As your child grows it gets harder and harder to satisfy them with gifts. Things are no longer simple. A handful of inexpensive toys usually isn’t going to cut it. Now you have to think bigger while thinking little. Fear not, you can figure out your budget and fill your basket that way. Consider movie lovers baskets with a movie or two and a gift card to the theater. If you want to add some special things pick out a poster from their favorite movie or aim for a small movie watcher memento. You can also do music lovers with CD’s, earbuds, music gift certificates and more. Coffee could also be a good one (if your teenager enjoys coffee). Fill a pair of mugs with tasty treats and offer a wide range of coffee options to them, including a gift card to a favorite coffee spot.

Often times the key to an excellent gift basket is to think outside the box. Start with a unique “basket” that will make a great container and will still have a use after the present has been opened. Add in a little stuffing to fill the basket. Then choose items that the receiver will like. Have fun with it and try to tailor it to the person you are giving it to.

The good thing about shopping online is that you get to see all the possible varieties a puzzle could have. It will be very easy for you to read the features and component of these toys. One of many parents’ biggest concerns when organising a kid’s party is the food and how much sugary junk is appropriate. Should we take the attitude that it’s a party, it doesn’t happen every day, so go crazy with the sugary treats. Or do we show concern for the health problems of today’s society and set a good example with lots of healthy nutritional items and nary a red thing in sight.

Well, before even thinking what to serve, how about thinking how to serve it. No matter what food you choose to serve you can at least control the portion sizes by organising the food into equal portions before even putting it on the table.

As you know, kids have a habit of grabbing, so one of my favourite styles of delivery is putting the food in a party box or bag. It works great with younger children as you can make sure everyone gets a bit of everything instead of little Bobby grabbing all the chocolate biscuits before anyone else gets a look in. It is also a great way to transport food to a park or other venue as it is already neatly packed away and can all be popped in the boot of the car without mess.

A plain brown paper bag works really well, as long as it is the type with the flat base. You could use a colourful bag from a craft shop or even a small inexpensive basket. I have a collection of these baskets which I picked up for at a discount store. I spray painted them all different colours and my friends and I have used them over.

If using a bag, simply stack all your finger food inside fold down the top and seal with a colourful sticker. Write each child’s name on the bag or box too as this method will enable you to easily cater for specific dietary needs. With a basket, pop the traditional serviette in the base then load up with the goodies, sandwiches, fruit, mini crisp bags, and a cup cake and so on. Talk about easy portion control!

If you are going to use a table you can still have some control over portions by serving the food in one sitting then pack it away when everyone is done. A buffet style delivery works well with teenagers, but leaving food out on a party table can be messy with little fingers around. It also means you can stay in control of who is doing what and won’t be distracted by missing children who are often found raiding the left over crisps…and eating them under the table.

Don’t forget to check with parents before the day them about any allergies or special dietary needs their child may have. To be on the safe side I always recommend avoiding anything with nuts in at parties as so many children these days are allergic

I saw this kid rocking out on Brick Lane last weekend. So cute!

When I was a little kid, I loved playing baseball. The smell of the freshly cut grass, sunflower seeds, and a day at the ball park were enough to excite me beyond anything else. And while the early morning hours weren’t exactly at my peak activity hours, you could count on me getting up early every Saturday morning to get ready for the weekly game. Simply put, there was something magical about little league games for me.

Nowadays, though, it seems as if some of the magic has been taken out of the game. A prime example of what I am talking about happened last night during a Little League World Series game. In the Northwest Regional Championship game, Lake Oswego, Oregon took on Kent, Washington. These two teams had met previously in a game thouroughly dominated by Kent. The game started as most do in these tournaments – both pitchers were throwing heat and dominating the opposing hitters. Then, in the 2nd inning, the Kent pitcher gave up a solo home run. Up until that point, he had recorded somewhere in the ball park of 4-5 stikeouts. He ended the game with upwards of 10 strikeouts, giving up a meager 3 runs. Yet, despite his stellar performance, he began tearing up with every hit or run Lake Oswego produced.

Another example happened in the same game. After having had two solid at-bats, a Lake Oswego player struck out on his thrid attempt. He, too, began to cry, even though his team was winning. One would think that having a .667 batting average in a vicotry would be cause for praise. However, as evident from the aforementioned examples, that is not the case. In both cases, each player was so broken up by minimal mistakes that he began to cry. But why? Why should a player get so upset over such a little thing as making one minor mistake? The answer – Pressure. These young boys are put under a tremendous amount of pressure. Because they are gifted athletically for their age, these players simply destroy the competition during their little league careers. They begin to develop a history of winning. When that happens, anything else is unacceptable. Winning, not the game, becomes the main objective, the driving force. However, for the most part, the kids are not the ones who yearn for victory. They simply want to play ball. The parents and the coaches, on the other hand, who seem to relive their glory days vicariously through their children, need the “W” and are wholeheartedly disappointed when they don’t get it. Believe me, I’ve been there. Overly-critical coaches are the main reason I stopped playing baseball, even though I too played on the all-star team.

We need to remember that baseball is just a game for kids. Whereas the lucky few who find their way to the professional baseball ranks should expect criticism, little leaguers should not. They don’t get paid for playing baseball. The American mentality of winning is a must and second place is the first loser has created a situation in which young boys are subjected to pressure for which they have not been prepared. The result – cry babies crop up every game, terrified of what their coaches or parents might think if they make a mistake. Seriously, baseball is just a game. We need to calm down a little bit and realize that the Little Leauge World Series is not the real World Series. After all, Little League baseball is for kids, not parents.

Tips for a great birthday party

Try not to set a time too late for the party to start or end as some toddlers like to have a nap in the afternoon and may get cranky. So two hours at the most is sufficient.

Ensure all kids’ parents stay to look after their child, to take them to the toilet because all those children cannot be looked after by one or two parents.

Make homemade invitations with your child so they can put their stamp on them and feel involved, even if it is just to put a painted hand print on them all. This will make your toddler feel on top of the world.

You can hire a room or a play centre for a child’s birthday party, but they can become very expensive and do not have the special touches that you as a parent can add to you’re child’s party because parents always know their child better than anybody.

If you have the party at you’re home it will be less expensive, but you have to do the cleaning up afterwards, which is never a nice sight after a child’s party. With cake and strawberry jelly up the walls and biscuits crushed into the carpets. But at the end of the party at least you will be able to see in their beaming faces, how much they have enjoyed themselves.

Toddler party food ideas

Finger foods are brilliant for children of toddler age such as:

Sliced apples

Cucumber and carrot sticks

Jellies – (strawberry/orange/blackcurrant)

Mention “kids” and “drumset” in the same sentence, and most parents are likely to run to the hills in terror. Frankly, they’re running in the wrong direction.

The irony is that these are frequently the same parents who have watched their children laugh, dance, and sing when they hear music. Yes, our kids know what’s good for them—and in more ways than you can imagine!

Countless studies have directly correlated the pursuit of music education with academic achievement.  In other words, children who study a musical instrument—especially from an early age—do better in school than children who do not.

Yet while parents are fine with the idea of music education, that somehow doesn’t extend to playing on a drumset. This may be a holdover from the days when the public’s perception of a band was “ten musicians…and a drummer.” Or it may be the idea that a drumset is too complicated a piece of equipment for a young child to master. Or—and this is the likeliest possibility—it may be that most parents equate “drums” with “loud and annoying.”

The truth is that learning to play a drumset at an early age, when motor skills are being honed, is actually easier than it would be later on. In addition, playing the drums affords a child most of the advantages gained by playing any other instrument—and many that other instruments can’t offer.

In addition to the studies connecting musical pursuits with academic achievements, there have been others that stress the importance of movement to the development of a child’s brain and the ability to perform higher cognitive functions. Researcher Linda Hartley wrote in her book Wisdom Of The Body Moving that “movement is in fact essential for the future physical, sensory, perceptual, psychological, and mental development of the child.” Playing a drumset helps to develop and enhance alternate hand and foot motion, hand-eye coordination, and overall flexibility. No other instrument calls for such a total involvement of the body.

Studies have also shown that a child’s sense of timing—that is, the ability to feel and express a steady beat—dramatically affects speech flow, motor tasks, sports skills, and other important developmental characteristics. Playing the drums is almost as much an athletic endeavor as it is a musical one.

In addition, drumming is based on the mathematical concepts of rhythm. Individuals—of any age—who master these concepts tend to be more organized in their thinking and more structured in the pursuit of their goals.

Movement, timing, rhythm…these are the very basis of playing the drums. How better to help a young child develop these important characteristics than on an instrument that owes its existence to them?

And let’s not forget the fun factor. Playing a drumset is an outlet for emotional as well as physical release, which every child needs. We live in an age when energetic outdoor playground activities are frequently replaced by sedentary ones like watching television, and when “Rock Band” refers to a video game instead of a group of like-minded musicians. Any pursuit that combines physical exercise with creative expression—like playing a drumset—should be encouraged whenever possible.

Fortunately, it’s possible right now, thanks to the existence of kid-sized drumkits. Rather than being toys, kids drumsets are genuine musical instruments scaled down to accommodate players from three to eleven years old. They’re inexpensive enough to be purchased on a “let’s see how he/she likes it” basis, and they’re “real” enough to be enticing and exciting for a young player. As for the “loud and annoying” factor, that can be controlled with a little padding or tape. (Try doing that with a PlayStation.)

Junior drum sets offer young children an opportunity for mental and physical development, creative expression, and emotional release. And who knows? They might even be the first step on the way to a long and stellar career.

Kid pool parties are fun and exciting. Creative games, lip-smacking food and fun activities all add to the brilliance of pool parties for children.

A feast is a celebration to remember that life is not just about work but also a journey to be spent with no regret. Everyone looks for the time of their lives and is excited to have any form of partying. These gatherings are held to celebrate and forget the monotony of nonstop routine. It is good bonding time with family and friends, for socialization, to unwind and release stress.

Kiddie parties are all about loud colors, games and food. Children are hyper active. They will get bored just staying in one place to watch an entertainment show or eat. They want many games that will make them jump and run until they get tired.

They want to sing together, dance to rhythmic beats and be with kids of their age. They look forward to birthday celebrations of their friends so they could all come together to have a wonderful feast.

A pool party can be a fantastic way for kids to have fun. Celebrate a graduation, a birthday, or simply organize it to have enjoyment. You only need to be little resourceful and a lot of creativity to make the event very fun for everyone.
First and foremost, make sure all guests are kept safe during the pool party. You will need vests, eye goggles and floaters even if you think the pool is not that deep anyways. Remember that majority of the attendants will be children, and you cannot look after each one of them round the clock during the party.

Decorate the venue with different colors. You could place balloons of assorted colors and designs. Let some of it float in the pool while hang some by the walls or posts, or even in backs of chairs.

Prepare food. Kids will surely love hotdogs, barbecue and burgers. Keep in mind that the venue will most likely be under the sun so prepare food that does not get spoiled easily.

So many activities can circulate around the pool and a game master can be delegated to do games for the kids. Someone can also perform magic and tricks with the use of water and pool accessories. You can prepare water bomb balloons and fill them up with water and tie them. A water balloon fight is a wonderful means that will have all the kids take part in the activity.

Use two water bomb balloons for the hot potato game. As the kids are assembled in a circle, start the music. Each one hands out the water balloon to the next kid until the music stops and the one who’s carrying the thing will be spurted with the hose. The last kid left will be the winner and will spray all the other kids who participated.

A nice corner for picture taking can be set up. Small tokens can add excitement, too. Set background music appropriate to the kids to maintain the atmosphere completes the setting. Decorations can be applied to the perimeter and ornaments mixed with the common language of the kids. The party can all start with a prayer and different delivery of the planned itinerary.

The pool party can be made with climate consideration, to maximize the proposed activities. Any given setting can be given suitable concepts. Kid pool parties can sometimes be full of unexpected predicaments. But in a private area and with adequate materials, pool parties can effect enjoyment and thrill. It’s going to be remembered as one of the happiest days of their lives.

It was great to meet Zac and the cast as well as other celebrities like david and carrie grant, kevin Adams from fame academy and coolest of all world class chef Gordon Ramsay! with over 8000 screaming kids outside with their parents, the atmosphere was unbelievable ! and walking down the red carpet was incredible! this is Alfies story.

Movies: The 2009 year had a great box-office, with many hits that kids would love to own. “Transformers 2,” “Twilight,” “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” are just a few titles to get you thinking. “Up,” “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” and “The Race to Witch Mountain” also had rave reviews. Movies are a great family gift, since all children in a family will enjoy it. It can be very economical to give a movie to a family rather than individual gifts!

Books: In this technologically-driven age, books are a rare gift. Kids still love to read, but chances are, they don’t own very many books. 4)  Children do well with things like shoe organizers.  Utilize the space on the back of their closet door for shoes, hats, hair accessories, gloves, scarves or purses.  Put plenty of hooks within their reach.  Use hooks that attract them to the space.  Big knobs are great for kids because they’re easy to manage and they don’t have pointy ends to poke them if they’re not paying attention.

5)  Make space for things like board games, building blocks, art supplies, or other toys that have a lot of little parts.  If you want your child to have to ask for these items to play with them, just put them up higher.  This will keep them and their friends from dumping out too many toys at once, creating more for you to clean up.

Maybe you discovered the hard way that kids are not exactly content wandering through murky museums or art galleries, gazing at massive cathedrals, or lunching in a lush setting. Let’s see, there’s the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom Lodge, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Epcot Center, MGM Studios, Legoland, and much more. In my opinion, the only attraction that’s getting a bit old is Epcot Center. The others are terrific. Just a word about the Animal Kingdom. The lodge is decorated with earth tone walls and African ambiance. Thirty-three wild acres contain over 100 different species including impalas, zebras, giraffes, Thompson’s gazelle… Your kids will love Orlando.

2. The Out ‘n About Treesort in the woods of Takilma, Oregon is a kid’s dream. What child hasn’t dreamed of living in a tree house? Well, families can actually live in one during their vacation. There are fourteen tree houses sleeping 2-8 people each. Lodgers use rope swings, swinging and suspension bridges, fire poles, and a 160 foot-long zip line to get around! During the day, families can take courses in tree house building or they can go rafting, swimming, or horseback riding, scale a 51-foot rope climbing tree, or take arts and crafts classes. The kids won’t stop raving about this place.

3. Atlantis Resort in Reno only cost 0 million to create. The complex includes 20,000 guest rooms, 38 restaurants, 11 exhibit lagoons, 50,000 animals, 11 pool areas, 7 water slides, including a 60-foot Mayan Temple drop into a tunnel submerged in a shark infested lagoon. Kids feel like they’ve just discovered the infamous lost continent themselves. If you live closer to Florida, there’s an Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas which includes many similar attractions to the Reno resort. But while we’re talking about good old Nevada we might as well mention the other fabulous kid-friendly resort, Circus Circus. It’s only the biggest permanent big top in the world and 3.5 million people flock there each year. Circus performers do their amazing feats non-stop, plus there are 200 arcade games, plus carnival games, and wandering clowns. As if that’s not enough, there are over 20 rides in the theme park, miniature golf, and laser tag.

4. Now for something completely different: dude ranches. Tanque Verde Ranch, in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, is one of the best known. Throughout its 640 acres roam over 120 horses. There are riding lessons, as well as every kind of trail ride you can imagine. Naturalist guides offer hikes through desert wilds, yawning canyons, towering cacti, and even secret waterfalls. Kids also can take tennis lessons, swimming, and arts and crafts. Appealing to adults are the delicious steak cook-outs, gourmet picnics, the square dancing, and the beautiful mountains rising in the distance.

5. As more and more vacationers are discovering Alaska, it’s becoming a top favorite. Alaska is still a bit wild, with 14 major mountain ranges, glaciers, much wildlife, and almost 34,000 miles of coastline. Ideally, it’s best if you can take a land and sea cruise to enjoy the best of both worlds, but do what your pocketbook can afford. Summer is the most comfortable time of the year and there is plenty to do. You can whale-watch or view a vast panoply of wildlife at Denali State Park or another refuge. You can tour a gold mine, count moose, backpack, bird watch, camp, cross country ski, dog sled, hike, salmon fish, visit Mt. McKinley, stargaze, take a riverboat discovery tour, or visit the Imaginarium Science Discovery Center. And this is the short list. I don’t think the kids will get bored.

6. New York City is sometimes left out as a kid-friendly place for whatever reason. But there’s a lot for kids in New York’s Central Park alone. You’ll find horse-drawn carriage rides, Heckscher Playground, lake boating, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater, Central Park Zoo/Tisch Children’s Zoo, Billy Johnson Playground, the Wollman Ice Skating Rink, and Belvedere Castle Nature Center. In the Broadway area, artists set up shop on the sidewalks and draw personalized names in a colorful pattern of dragons, pandas, and dolphins. These are extremely popular with kids. But the big draw, of course, is what Broadway offers. Disney invested million to restore the old Ziegfield Follies haunt, the New Amsterdam Theater, to stage The Lion King in 1997. It’s still playing to packed audiences. More recent Disney extravaganza include the Little Mermaid. Other popular family-friendly fare includes Mary Poppins, Wicked, and Hairspray. What can I say? This only scratches the surface in regard to what New York offers. Check it out.

7. Most don’t realize it, but while some other states slept, South Carolina has been quietly becoming the #2 state for tourism, after Florida. Myrtle Beach alone welcomes over 13,000,000 guests per year. It’s a 60-mile stretch of sand called the Grand Strand and features a great beach, water parks, amusement parks, dinner shows, the Hard Rock Park, special hotel and beach activities, and much more. MagiQuest, a major attraction, is a uniquely interactive experience. It takes many elements of a child’s fantasy world, combines them, and creates a special place where children can be heroic, valiant, and brave. 8. I’ve got to include at least one choice that’s considered extra easy on the family budget. It’s the YMCA in Winter Park, Colorado and it goes by the name of Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch. Last time I checked, rates for a two-bedroom cabin with kitchen started at 6 per night. If you cook a lot of your own food, you can get off pretty easy. The area comprises 5,100 acres of pristine near world-class ski resorts. There is hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, a climbing wall, an indoor pool and gym, and horseback riding in the summer. And best for families with kiddies, there’s a full kids’ program for ages 3 and up. Who likes winter sports? This is for you.

9. Club Med Ixtapa may be the attraction on the list that would appeal most equally to both adults and kids. It is 30 acres along Mexico’s western coast that hosts over 20,000 visitors a year, 60 percent of them grade schoolers. Kids of every age group are kept gloriously busy with all sorts of outdoor activities, fun shows, and crafts. If you want, there’s even a perfect kids-only dining room. Meanwhile, the parents get to play! There’s tennis, scuba, archery, kayaking, water polo, volleyball, and gourmet picnics. Families venturing off the Club Med property can visit the island, take a sunset cruise, go fishing, or take an excursion into the Mexican fishing village of Zihuatenejo. Then melt your troubles away at the Ixtapa Club Spa and get an outdoor massage or whatever else your heart desires.

10. There’s a reason Caribbean cruises corner almost 50 percent of the cruise line market in the U.S. It’s because the Caribbean offers the vacation so many have dreamed of for years. Imagine yourself on the largest, sleekest ocean liner imaginable, watching a brilliant sunset against rippling waves out of your cabin window. Then imagine eating superb food whenever it strikes your fancy, day or night. Imagine wonderfully entertaining shows, on-shore excursions to lush islands, and see yourself relaxing or engaging in activities according to your fancy. Then realize that, if you wish, the kids will be engaged for much of each day in a children’s program tailor-made just for them. This is what you call an all-inclusive vacation. What more could you want?

1) Truitt Hoff Nature Preserve DuPage County To reach it from Roosevelt Road (Route 38), turn north on Kress Road, then east on Downs Drive, then north on Industruial Drive. Truitt-Hoff Nature Preserve is located in the Morainal Section of the Northeastern Illinois Morainal Natural Division. 120.3 acres in size, the preserve encompasses high-quality mesic prairie, wet-mesic prairie, freshwater marsh, mesic silt loam savanna, and wet prairie natural communities.

2) Kemper Park Nature Preserve Kane County Location and Access: Rt. 68 and 25 in Carpentersville, head north on Rt. 25 for 1.2 miles to Hazard Rd. East (Right) on Hazard until it ends. Kemper Park is a thirteen acre nature preserve is an addition to Helm Woods Nature Preserve, a larger forested tract of dry-mesic upland and northern flatwood forests. Kemper Park Nature Preserve is contiguous to Helm Woods and is comprised of similar plant communities. The dry-mesic upland forest is dominated by white, red and black oaks while the flatwoods are dominated by swamp white oaks, ashes and elms with swamp sedge and fowl manna grass occurring frequently in the understory. Many forbs, especially spring ephemerals, sedges, grasses and shrubs can be found throughout the entire woodland complex. Garlic mustard is a major problem in this preserve. Prescribed burns have been implemented to control this invasive species.

3) Cap Sauers Holdings Nature Preserve Cook County Hwys. 12/20 and 45 west of Hickory Hills, take Hwy. 45 south 5.5 mi. to McCarthy Road, turn and go west on McCarthy Road 1.5 mi. Cap Sauers Holdings Nature Preserve, at 1520 acres, is the largest nature preserve in northeastern Illinois. Dominant geological features include the rolling topography typical of the Valparaiso Moraine of the Morainal Division of northeastern Illinois and an Esker. The Visitation Esker is one of the best defined examples of this glacial feature in the state. Most of the site is composed of young upland forests, and disturbed prairie and oak savanna communities. Much of the former prairie and oak savanna communities are now threatened by brushy native and non-native species that have advanced because fire has been suppressed. The Forest Preserve District of Cook County and The Nature Conservancy have embarked upon an ambitious project to restore much of this site to its presettlement condition.

Many parents are frustrated when it comes to  getting their kids to clean up their rooms and keep it that way. You are not alone if your kid enjoys playing and scattering all the clutter in his/her room, and then leave it that way until the following morning. Of course if you hate clutter, you’ll pick up the toys and stuff off the floor and the cycle goes on each and every day.

But don’t fret because there are top 5 tricks to get your kid to clean his/her room. You don’t need to use pressure to get things done since most kids react negatively and resent that.

(1) Use designation

Teach your child to designate specific areas in his/her room for each toy or item. If you wish for him/her to keep all the toys in a chest, then show him/her how to properly do it; same goes for books, bags and other items that he/she uses.

If this is a tough task, use labels to designate each type of item. Label chests that are used to keep toys, desk drawers and cabinets for school items, and so forth. Show and teach your kid that keeping his/her belongings in their proper designated areas is an important routine that should be done at the end of the day.

(2) Set good examples to your kid

Don’t expect your kid to be an organize guru especially if you and the rest of your family are not cleaning up your clutter too. What a kid sees through the actions of his parents and siblings will reflect through his/her own actions. Make sure that you and your older kids are setting good examples to your little one so it would be easier to instil the importance of cleanliness and orderliness in his/her room.

(3) Make cleaning fun

Turn your cleaning session into a fun game so your kid will enjoy the task instead of dread it. You may set-up a challenging game such as beat-the-clock to finish the clean-up or singing and dancing while organizing the items to their designated places. Think of alternative ways to do this so your kid won’t get bored of the routine.

(4) Give reward or positive reinforcement for a job well-done

Don’t expect your 3-year old to end up with a squeaky-clean room; it won’t happen yet, but it will as he/she ages. No matter how small and imperfect the result of your kid’s clean-up, always give a reward in various forms. You may give allowance to your grade-schooler per day or per week for a great clean-up; a favorite treat for your little one; or a special prize for a general cleaning session with your 6-year old.

You can also make your own reward much like those star rewards given at school. Let your kid boast the stars he/she will get by sticking them onto his/her room’s corkboard or door. You can also make printed certificate of recognition via powerpoint. Kids love getting rewards, so make the most out of this opportunity.

It was a real tough obstacle to overcome. No, it wasn’t the fact that he grew up in poverty or that his father was arrested for robbery when he was twelve. There was something else Tyrone had to overcome if he ever wanted to fulfill his dream of becoming a basketball player. Something that seemed to bother everyone else much more than it did him.

But Tyrone never listened to what other people said anyway He still went out for his high school basketball team and not only started all four years, but guided Dunbar High School to a state championship and through two straight undefeated seasons.

“All right,” people said at this point. “High school is fine. But with your handicap, ain’t no way you’re playing college ball.” Wrong again. They underestimated the DESIRE this kid had to play the game. Tyrone wanted it and wanted it BAD. Nothing, not even his handicap, was going to stop him. After he graduated from high school, Tryone attended Wake Forest college. He played basketball all 4 years averaging 11.3 points, 8.4 assists and 3.1 steals a game. Not bad for a kid with a handicap such as he had.

Then Tryone stated talking about going into the NBA. “Paaa leeese,” people would say jokingly. “Ain’t no way.” People laughed and thought nothing of it. As far as they were concerned, the kid should be happy that he did as well as he did in college. But the NBA? FORGET ABOUT IT!

But once again Tryone believed in what HE could do and not what other people thought he could do. He wanted to play ball and wanted it bad. If only he could get an opportunity to show what he could do. If only the NBA would look past his handicap and give him a chance.

To the amazement to others, Tyrone got the opportunity he hoped for. The Washington Bullets took a chance on him and drafted him in the 13th round. He finally got his “moment in the sun.” But could he prove himself? Was his handicap too much to overcome? Would DESIRE win out over LOGIC or would LOGIC prevail?

To make a long story short, DESIRE did win over LOGIC. Not only did he play in the NBA, but he was the teams (the Hornets) leader in time played, assists, steals, turnovers and has a career average of 11.2 points a game. What’s more amazing is that this man played in the NBA for 11 years in spite of the fact that he was born with the handicap of being only 5’ 3” tall, standing just below the chest of most NBA players. The shortest man to ever play in the NBA with the likes of Jordan and all the other greats.

Tryone “Muggsy” Bogues is a great example of how the desire to want to succeed will win out over the logic to quit if a person is willing to work hard enough to achieve his or her goals. If there was only one poster hanging on the wall in my room to motivate me in WHATEVER goal I wanted to succeed in, it would be that of “Muggsy” Bogues, the little kid who could.

Children love routine. Having a routine gets your children ready for bed so they will drift off to sleep easier. It may not solve all your bedtime problems, but it will go a long way to setting the right foundation for sleep. With some kids, a good bedtime routine is all they need.

Different families may have differing ideas on how to go about it, but this is what works for some. The first thing you must do is to be sure your children will be really sleepy at their bedtime. If you have chosen the right time for their bedtime, they should be tired by bedtime. Be sure to take naps into consideration when calculating how early or late your kids will be going to bed.

A couple of hours before bedtime your children should be involved in physically active play. In the warm, light summer months, this play can be outdoors on a playground. Winter makes this a little more difficult, but there are still some things you can do. A small indoors trampoline is great for kids. An even easier way that kids can be coaxed into physical play is if the parents take the lead and play with them. Hide and seek, tag and chase, wrestling and tussling, dancing and free-for-all roughhouse play can get hearts pumping. This is an area where fathers seem to have the most talent. The whole idea is to make the children tired. Undoubtedly it will make the parents tired too, but mothers and fathers usually need more exercise than they are getting in a routine day.

The next step, perhaps an hour before bedtime, is to have a bedtime snack. This does not need to be a big deal. It is just a little food to help them tide themselves over to morning and breakfast, which is a long time away. A cheese stick or a small glass of milk and a slice of bread or a handful of crackers is all it takes. Cooking is not required. Sweets are probably not a good idea for many reasons. Having a little something in their stomach before bedtime makes them more comfortable and less likely to sleep lightly or have trouble getting to sleep in the first place.

A bath is the next thing to do. Warm water and a little soaking time are soothing to the spirit. This seems to work better with some kids than it does with others. If your child cannot be restrained from turning bath time into more rowdy time, then maybe the bath needs to be before snack time.

The last and most important thing in a bedtime routine is quiet time just before bed. This is not a time for television, which can be too stimulating for a child. If you must have television in the evening than at least be careful to avoid violence or other exciting elements in the program. Some kids only need fifteen minutes of quiet time with their parent reading a book to them. Some kids seem to need an hour’s worth of quiet time to be ready for sleep. What works out well is when a younger sibling can have some quiet time with one parent first and be put to bed, while older siblings play quietly. Then the next oldest sibling has his own quiet time and reading time next with the parent, and so on. That way each child gets some one-on-one time with a parent just before sleep.

Having a routine and doing mostly the same thing next after night gives children an expectation of what comes next. Also elements of the evening routine should make sure children are sleepy and comfortable by bedtime. With their bodies and minds ready for sleep, children will fall asleep much easier.
